Can you tell us about your role at OHP this year?

I will be playing the role of Berta at OHP this year, Berta is the governess of Bartolo’s household. When it comes to love, Berta can’t understand what all the fuss is about. However, she secretly wishes she had someone to love herself…

What do you hope to gain or learn from the OHP Young Artists Scheme?

I’m very excited to be making my debut with OHP this year and getting the opportunity to work on such an ensemble piece. In addition to performing in The Barber of Seville, I’m looking forward to learning from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in a masterclass alongside other Young Artists.

How do you prepare for a role that is normally played by someone older than you are?

Age is definitely not a limiting factor when it comes to energy. I think it is important to find what would make the character act like a teenager, even if they are written as elderly.

The Barber of Seville is (unsurprisingly) about a barber. Do you have any stories of terrible haircuts?

I am very fortunate that my Mum is a hairdresser so luckily, I have never had a bad haircut. She is always on hand at concerts with a hairbrush and hairspray! There was one occasion in Primary school where I cut my own hair. Needless to say, my mum wasn’t too pleased.

Are there any roles you haven’t performed yet that you’d like to?

I love Janáček’s music as it’s so vivid and colorful. Vixen from The Cunning Little Vixen would be a dream role for me as there is so much room for imagination in bringing her to life.

What is one piece of advice, musical or otherwise, that you’ve been given that has stayed with you?

Find what makes you unique and sell it!
