Conceived as ‘total theatre’, Carmina Burana is one of the most exciting choral works of the 1930s, based on texts from mediaeval Bavaria that celebrate life at its most vibrant, hedonistic, greedy and immediate. Drinking songs, libidinous monks, wild dances and the plangent lament of a roasted swan on a spit feature in this iconic creation.
Dominic Ellis–Peckham conducts the Opera Holland Park Chorus in a single performance on 4 July, joined by The Percussion Ensemble of London, with soloists Fflur Wyn (Turandot), Ruairi Bowen (Acis and Galatea) and James Cleverton (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), in Wilhelm Killmayer’s propulsive arrangement for two pianists and five percussionists, showcasing the company’s acclaimed chorus as heard at Opera Holland Park, the Aldeburgh Festival and Sadler’s Wells.
