Will Todd’s enchanting musical retelling of A Christmas Carol weaves the melodies of traditional Victorian carols and the midwinter chimes of handbells through each episode of Charles Dickens’s seasonal ghost story.
In a libretto drawn by David Simpatico from the much-loved 1848 novella, we meet Ebenezer Scrooge, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, and the family and friends whose kindness Scrooge has hardened his heart against, only to understand by their example the meaning of Christmas. A spooky and salutary story for all ages from Opera Holland Park, with a festive happy ending.
Directed by Martin Duncan (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), eight of the company’s finest principals, including Victoria Simmonds, Julien Van Mellaerts and Paul Carey Jones, perform A Christmas Carol in a Victorian costumed semi-staging in the beautiful setting of Hawksmoor’s Smith Square masterpiece.
Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 December at 6.30pm.
