The Czech poet Ilse Weber was interned in Theresienstadt in February 1942. Author of Mendel Rosenbusch: Tales for Jewish Children, she continued to write and compose during her internment in the concentration camp, alongside the composers Pavel Haas, Viktor Ullmann, Hans Krasa and Gideon Klein. In October 1944 Weber was transported to Auschwitz, where she and her younger son Tommy were sent to the gas chamber on arrival.

This #HolocaustMemorialDay we remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
To help preserve memories and ensure lessons from the Holocaust and more recent genocides are learnt, please consider donating to Holocaust Memorial Day at: www.hmd.org.uk/donate
