The second of two co-productions between Opera Holland Park, Scottish Opera and D’Oyly Carte Opera in the 2025 Season pits WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s one act comic courtroom drama of a broken engagement against the London premiere of Emma Jenkins and Toby Hession’s new political satire. Premiered in 1875, Trial by Jury presents a case of breach of promise, with a self-confessed ruffian as the accused, and the bride that he abandoned at the altar as the winsome plaintiff, poking fun at the legal profession en route to an unusual happy ending. Commissioned by Scottish Opera and D’Oyly Carte Opera, A Matter of Misconduct! sees the aspiring leader of a political party attempting to cover up a more modern and sadly familiar scandal, with the aid of his devious lawyers, Lawless, Lawless, Lawless and Crook.
