Mezzo-soprano Victoria Simmonds led a sparkling ensemble in Rossini’s 1817 comic fairytale, with Fleur de Bray and Heather Lowe as her vain step-sisters, Nicholas Lester as Dandini, and Nico Darmanin as the Prince. Dane Lam’s conducting was described as “endlessly energetic and uncompromising on rhythmic detail” in The Guardian. In The Spectator, Richard Bratby wrote that Jonathan Veira’s Don Magnifico “cheerfully ran away with every scene: blustering, rolling his eyes and smirking with gluttonous satisfaction as he fantasised about chickens and sturgeons”. The production transferred to Denmark in October 2016.
